Activities FAQs

Where can I find out what’s available?  The best place to get an up to date idea of what’s going on is the local tourist magazine Vieques Insider.  It has articles and advertisements and (in the middle of the magazine) a comprehensive telephone directory. The entire magazine can be read online.

Is is possible too rent bicycles on the island? Yes. Also you can go on organized tours to remoter parts of the island.

Is it possible to rent Kayaks? Yes, there are kiosks (“Fun Brothers”) and other hire places at the end of the Malecon, 5 minutes’ walk from our house, or see Vieques Insider.

Are there trips organized to the BioBay? Yes, lots of them and most of them leave from the Malecon in Esperanza, about 5 minutes’ walk from our house. If this is your main interest in Vieques, try to come to the island when there is no moon. The darker the night, the better your biobay experience will be.

Can you walk from Beach to Beach? Many beaches are in walking distance (Town Beach, Coco Beach, Sun Bay Beaches). You can walk quite a long way you start in Esperanza and head west, though you will have to scramble over rocks in places. Going east you can walk to Sun Bay (15 minutes) Media Luna (30 minutes) and Navio (40 minutes). Please bear in mind you will be walking under a hot sun.

Can we go on Dive Trips? Yes, see Vieques Insider for dive companies.

How close is nearest snorkeling? Town beach near Tradewinds Restaurant (2-3 minutes’ walk), or Coco Beach (5 minutes’ walk). There are some shallow reefs and various small pretty fish to see.

Can we hire/ride horses on the island? There are organized tours which will take you out for a ride of one to two hours.

Is it possible to rent a boat on the island? Not that we know of, but there may be organized day sailing or fishing trips.  See Vieques Insider.

Is there any windsurfing? Local winds are not strong or consistent enough for really good windsurfing, and expert windsurfers will probably not enjoy Vieques. There have been windsurfers for hire in the past, but none that we know of currently.  Kite boarders may do better in the lighter winds, but we do not see people kite boarding often on the island.

Is there any surfing? The local kids do surf on the north side beaches along Bravos de Boston. However, it does not look like great surfing, and there are reefs under most of the beaches there. We have seen folks surfing in Esperanza harbor on the tail end of a hurricane, the only time we have ever seen big surf on Vieques.
