Things To Do

The main thing to do on Vieques is nothing at all! Come here to relax! A good lazy day on Vieques will consist of low key activities such as: getting up when you feel like it, having breakfast, going the beach, hanging out, swimming, reading, coming back home, having Pina Colada’s while the sun is setting, eating, in or out, reading some more, going to bed. To assist you in hanging out, beach chairs, towels, hammocks and coolers are available at our house for your use.

If you really must do something, there is lots to do. Day time activities can include things like: exploring the island by jeep, on foot, or by bike, going to look at the museum in Isabella, checking out different bars/restaurants for lunch, visiting one of the art galleries, snorkeling, or a trip out from Esperanza in the Glass Bottomed Boat. You can engage in fly-fishing from shore, or various other fishing trips are available. Perhaps a kayaking trip might take your fancy. Or you could combine kayaking and fishing, snorkeling or the BioBay. You might ( a couple of times a month in season), be able to go on a tour of some of the expensive and architecturally interesting homes up in the hills of Vieques.

Attractions and Activities on offer change from season to season.  The best place to get an up to date idea of what’s going on is the local tourist magazine Vieques Insider.

If you are an artist, Vieques offers warmth and light, beach scenes and tropical vistas, as well as lots of unusual vegetation, and some art galleries. Please see the art section for more.

There is quite good snorkeling close to the house.  Town beach and Coco beach, both within five minutes walk, have some small reefs just off shore and there are lots of small colorful fish to be seen. Town beach is almost always calm and easy to get into, Coco Beach can have slightly more surf and accordingly be a little more challenging. There is also good snorkeling on some other beaches, and often boat trips out to offshore reefs are possible, organized by Blue Caribe.

In the evening, there are plenty of restaurants and bars. Or perhaps you might want to try a midnight swim, or maybe a trip to the bioluminescent bay (recommended!)

Vieques is not suburban America!  You will definitely not find any of the usual attractions or distractions: no fast food, no cinemas, no “entertainment’s” (other than the occasional dance night at one bar or another, or special food nights at some restaurants), and no TV (at least not in our house). You might ( a couple of times a month in season), be able to go on a tour of some of the fancy homes up in the hills of Vieques if that interests you.

That’s it folks – come here to relax! We do have a cassette/radio/CD player in the house (but please don’t take it to the beach. There are scrabble and chess games. Take your favorite books, or read ours (a couple of shelves of thrillers and some literature), or borrow them from one of the informal libraries run by local stores on the Malecon in Esperanza. Lie around on the beach. Relax.
