Playa Grande This beach is on the south west end of Vieques, about three miles along the coast from Esperanza. Just inland from the beach, and connected by a small waterway (next photo), is a large lagoon. Its not a bad beach, rarely has more than one or two people on it. It does have some reefs off shore but they are quite deep. We've been snorkeling here and seen some big turtles. This is part of the West End of the island that only really opened up to the public in 2001. At the time, it pretty much doubled the size of the island for those living and visiting here. In 2003 they also opened up the East End to public access, again increasing the effective size of the island greatly. |
